Title: THE BEST MAN

Author: Barbie Bohrman

Genre: Contemporary romance

About The Best Man:

Veronica Webber is single again after being in a loveless marriage way past its expiration date. For the first time in a very long time, she feels free and after being burned so badly by love in the past, any thought of romance is the last thing on her mind. In walks a man from her past, Trevor Allen, a tall, dark, and handsome womanizer who is usually all about the bottom line. For Trevor that bottom line has always been made up of the countless notches on his bedpost. But when he sees Veronica after so many years, he can’t help but be drawn to her and know her again… even if that means being friend-zoned from the start. As this unlikely pair spends more and more time together, they quickly realize that there might be something between them that goes past "just friends." But there’s just one tiny detail that makes this situation slightly more complicated… Trevor was Veronica’s ex-husband’s best man at their wedding nine years ago. So when past mistakes and indiscretions come back to haunt them, will their happily ever after end before it even gets started? Or will the best man win this time.

EXCERPT:
I matched her step for step when she took a couple of strides backward, carefully dodging other people walking around us on the semi-crowded sidewalk.
“Listen, I’m just going to start walking home now. It’s been enlightening and a pleasure to see you again after all these years, but I think I’m kind of done with tonight.”
Now, I could have let her disappear into the night forever. She had already turned around and started to make her way down Third Avenue and out of my life for good. This city was so big, and the odds of us ever seeing each other again were so remote, that I had a greater chance of getting hit by a bus. And for some reason, that thought didn’t sit well with me. At all. So I looked down the street one more time, hoping that I hadn’t lost her perfect silhouette to the city just yet. Veronica’s jet-black hair was actually shining like a goddamn beacon in the moonlit sky of the city...and for fuck’s sake, I had officially lost my mind. I didn’t know why and I didn’t care just then, but it was happening. I was going to make good on my previous thought. I was going to not only be the good guy...I was going to keep on being the good guy tonight for her.
“Veronica, wait!” I yelled down the street.
She stopped and turned around. I ran down the sidewalk and caught up to her. She looked surprised and smiled cautiously at me as I tried to catch my breath. Dammit, I needed to kick my trainer’s ass. The amount of money I paid him to keep me in shape was grand larceny if I was out of breath by a short sprint. Thirty-one and heaving was just plain sad.
     “Let’s celebrate your three-month anniversary.”
“What?” she asked. “You can’t be serious?”
After finally catching my breath, I said, “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.”
The bridge of her nose scrunched as she tried to make sense of that. “Wait, I didn’t call you Shirley, did I? What is happening exactly?”
“I’m taking you out to celebrate since your friend couldn’t make it,” I said. I let that information sink in for real this time with her and then asked her, “Where to?”
     “Are you serious? Anywhere?”
     “Anywhere.”
She glanced up and down the street, looking for something or somebody maybe to save her from me and this insane idea I had. But no help came. Instead, when she looked at me again, I saw a flicker of hope in her eyes that confirmed I was knee deep in some shit I had no business getting into.
“Okay,” she said finally. “You’re on. But first I need to ask you something.”
“You can ask me anything, anytime. I’m an open book.”
“You’re not doing this to get into my pants, right? Because, Trevor, just in case you were, that will never, ever happen, okay?”
I stamped down the lump in my throat as her voice got huskier during her little warning speech. Little did she know that I was actually not in it for my little fella...who was not at all fucking little. I was in this tonight to be a friend to her. God knows I didn’t have many of those either. It had always been my brothers and me. That’s it. So I could only imagine how it must have felt to be left out in the cold, literally, like she had been tonight.
“I cross my heart and hope to die that I will not try to get into your pants tonight,” I said, charming as could be.
